The limping nuns. Two cases of hip dislocation in a medieval female monastery

We observed the upward displacement of femoral heads in skeletal remains two females unearthed from medieval cemetery monastery Santa Maria Valle, Cividale del Friuli (North-Eastern Italy). Examination bone vestiges suggests diagnosis hip dislocation as consequence developmental dysplasia hip. In addition, youngest subject first sacral vertebra appears lumbarized and shows unilateral defect right pars interarticularis. Developmental is one most common congenital diseases musculoskeletal system newborns. Findings suggest that skeletons belong to nuns, who perhaps enter monastic life precisely because their pathology.
